28/06/05 - The Face Of Evil in South Armagh
Sean Gerard Hughes is a seasoned terrorist and wealthy farmer from Armagh. He is believed to have been involved in almost all Provisional IRA operations in the South Armagh area from the 1970s, including the brutal murder of self-confessed informer Eamon Collins.
Also implicated in many operations including the south quay bombing in Canary Wharf, which brought the previous IRA ceasefire to an end in 1996 and in which two citizens were killed. He also allegedly took part (as a young volunteer under Slab Murphy) in the 1979 Warrenpoint massacre and later masterminded the killing of Justice Gibson and his wife in 1987.
Here he is above, given the nickname of "The Surgeon" in Toby Harnden's book Bandit Country.
The Times claims that Hughes has left the IRA's Provisional Army Council. He is believed to have lost interest in serving on the council because the IRA has become inactive, though his departure is not seen as a protest.
